Michael Calderwood came to photography pretty much by chance; in fact, it would be fairer to say that photography came to him, the fate of many professional photographers working today. His university degree describes Michael as an historian, an occupation dealing richly in the past but rarely providing a future.
Determined to leave England for a year, he embarked on a Latin American adventure in 1973, for which he bought a Russian 35mm camera. Landing in Mexico City, he set his sights firmly on Tierra de Fuego at the southern tip of the continent. Here was an odyssey to be proud of for a young man, but it came to an early end in the romantic streets and transparent air of Oaxaca, barely 200 miles to the southeast of the capital. 30 years on, photography has finally taken him as far as Brazil, via most of Central America, Colombia and Chile, but Mexico, where he lives, maintains a central place in his heart.
Surviving the best efforts of the rustic Russian camera to dissuade him from a career in photography, Michael has graduated to Japanese and German hardware, and now works with architects, graphic designers, magazine editors, book publishers, advertising agencies and corporate clients.
He has made books on landscape, interior design, the city, tequila and most recently wine and golf, topics (with one obvious exception) not unique to Mexico but through the Mexican prism given an original and fascinating perspective. His abiding passion is aerial photography, in pursuit of which he has flown over 3,000 hours in machines of all shapes and sizes. After more than 25 years of professional picture-taking, he has amassed a library of nearly 100,000 images, most of it related to Mexico and Central America.
Michael Calderwood llegó a la fotografía casi por casualidad, de hecho, sería más justo decir que la fotografía llegó a él, siendo el destino de muchos fotógrafos profesionales que trabajan hoy en día. Su título universitario lo describe como historiador, una profesión que trata ampliamente el pasado, pero rara vez sustenta un futuro.
Decidido a salir de Inglaterra durante un año, se embarcó en una aventura de América Latina en 1973, para lo cual compró una cámara rusa de 35mm. Aterrizando en la Ciudad de México, se propuso llegar a la lejana Tierra de Fuego en el extremo sur del continente, una odisea por la cual un joven podría sentirse orgulloso, pero llegó rápidamente a su fin en las románticas calles y el aire transparente de Oaxaca, apenas 200 millas al sureste de la capital. 30 años después la fotografía lo ha llevado a Brasil, Colombia y Chile, y a la mayor parte de Centroamérica, pero Mexico, donde radica actualmente ocupa un lugar especial en su corazón.
A pesar de los mejores esfuerzos de la rústica cámara rusa de disuadirlo de una carrera fotográfica, Michael se graduó a un equipo japonés y alemán, y ahora trabaja con arquitectos, diseñadores gráficos, editores de revistas, editores de libros, agencias de publicidad y clientes corporativos.
Ha realizado libros sobre el paisaje, diseño interior, la ciudad de México, el tequila y más recientemente el vino y el golf, temas (con una excepción evidente) que no son exclusivamente mexicanos, pero visto a través del prisma de México muestra una perspectiva original y fascinante. Su pasión es la fotografía aérea, en cuya búsqueda ha volado más de 3,000 horas en máquinas de toda clase y tamaño. Después de más de 25 años de tomar fotos profesionales, ha acumulado un archivo de cerca de 100,000 imágenes, la mayoría de ellas de Mexico y Centroamérica.
